Title: Quantifying Geometric Order in Epithelial Tissues

Speaker: Matthew Miklius, Northwestern University

Abstract:

Geometric order in epithelial tissues has been a subject of research in the mathematical and biological sciences since the advent of the microscope.  Two questions are paramount.  (i) Can we understand the non-trivial spatial patterns using first principles of mathematics, physics, and biology?  (ii) Can we use this understanding to draw meaningful conclusions about differences in tissue organization?  We propose a mathematical model that relates geometric order to polydispersity in wide range of proliferating tissues.  In addition, we develop a standardized approach for the study of tissue statistics designed to eliminate biases found throughout the literature and enable meaningful comparison of experimental data.
