Error and Truth in Personality Judgment

David C. Funder

University of California, Riverside

Studies of “error” in judgment, interesting as they are, are not informative about how and when truthful judgment of personality occurs.  For this, an alternative accuracy paradigm is required.  The Realistic Accuracy Model proposes that accurate personality judgment occurs when relevant information is available to a judge who detects the information and utilizes it correctly.  This model helps to explain the principal four moderators of accurate personality judgment which are properties of the judge, the target of judgment, the trait being judged, and the information (quantity and quality) upon which the judgment is based.
