Assessment involves much more than grading. Often considered burdensome, assessment is a significant mode of engaging and encouraging student development.  Workshop participants will be able to recognize and negotiate students' expectations with regard to grading and grades; apply concepts from alternative assessment literature to fairly and flexibly evaluate students' effort and mastery of course material; and identify long-term assessment strategies to operationalize students' critical thinking.
