Riding Three Horses

Friday, November 20, 2:30 PM, Tech, LR3

Hoffman's research program rides three horses. They have pioneered the use of electron-nuclear double resonance, a combination of NMR and EPR spectroscopies, to determine metalloenzyme mechanisms. His presentation will describe progress in determining the mechanism of "Nitrogen Fixation" - the reduction of dinitrogen to two ammonia molecules - by the enzyme, nitrogenase, a process essential for all life.

MERCOURI KANATZIDIS, Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry

First Comes the Synthesis: Pursuing the Unimaginable

Friday, November 20, 4:00 PM, Tech, LR3

Where will the next new materials breakthroughs come from? Synthesis and discovery play a key role in chemistry and progress toward "materials design" has been considerable. Kanatzidis' approach toward materials design, synthesis and discovery and some of the high impact developments that became possible after such discoveries will be presented.
