SUMMARY:Victor Roy » Social Strategy for Global Health Equity: Lessons from Multi-Drug Resistant TB
DESCRIPTION:Faculty and Fellows Colloquium » Social Strategy for Global Health Equity: Lessons from Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Victor Roy\, GlobeMed and Feinberg School of Medicine In the mid 1990s\, patients with multi-drug resistant forms of tuberculosis in poor countries around the world had little hope for treatment. But by 2003\, the landscape had changed in significant ways\, and global policy shifted towards lower drug prices and expanded treatment access. What were the key dynamics explaining this change? What lessons from this policy change can we apply to advance current efforts in global health\, particularly around tuberculosis? In attempting to answer these questions\, Victor's presentation will share empirical research based on document analysis from a wide array of players involved in TB policy\, from a small community-based NGO\, pharmaceutical companies\, to the World Health Organization. Through this case study\, Victor's research aims to strengthen our understanding of the emerging field of global health policy\, in which various players vie to shape strategies that influence the health of billions across the world. Victor Roy is currently a first-year medical student at Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. Prior to that\, Victor completed an MPhil in Sociology from Cambridge University as a Gates Cambridge scholar\, earning the highest mark of distinction with a dissertation focusing on global policy on multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. He is also a founding member and current board member for GlobeMed\, a non-profit engaging undergraduates on 33 universities across the United States to advance a movement for global health equity. He served as GlobeMed's first full time Executive Director after graduating magna cum laude with a BA in 2007 from Northwestern University in political science. http://www.bcics.northwestern.edu/events/index.html
