SUMMARY:Linguistics Colloquium: Elizabeth Smith (Northwestern University)
DESCRIPTION:Testing tests: investigations in the typology of meaning
Semanticists and pragmaticists have a number of tests for classifying meanings as assertions\, presuppositions\, implicatures\, etc.\, and on the basis of these tests\, we make claims about the analyses of various phenomena in a wide range of languages\, so it is important that we know what these tests are really telling us (and what they are tests *of*). In this talk\, I report the results of a number of experiments I have conducted while at Northwestern designed to elucidate the links between different kinds of meanings according to their patterns with respect to some of these tests.
Chambers Hall (600 Foster Street)\, Lower Classroom Level
