Geoffrey Khan will present the Jeremiah S. and Helen James Lecture in Assyrian Civilization and Culture.

Geoffrey Khan is Professor of Semitic Philology at the University of Cambridge. He is a world-renowned scholar of modern Assyrian and related dialects in the family of Semitic languages known as “Neo-Aramaic”. Khan has conducted extensive fieldwork among native speakers in both the Christian and Jewish communities of northern Iraq and northwest Iran, succeeding in documenting many of the region’s endangered dialects. Because knowledge of the Neo-Aramaic dialects is now being lost among the younger generations, many of whose communities have been displaced, Khan’s work represents an immensely important linguistic record that will be of interest to all.
