Lessons that bring together the real world and the classroom can facilitate active learning and enrich students’ knowledge, but it can be difficult to know how to incorporate those experiences with course material. In this workshop, we will explore the basic concepts of experiential education and best practices for integrating community issues, public participation, and service learning into an established course. Topics will include preparing students’ expectations, guiding students’ reflections, building community connections, assessing experiences, and facilitating community engagement. Participants will receive a handout detailing suggested exercises and assignments as well as a literature review of relevant scholarship.
