SUMMARY:Serious Fun at Sun City: Re-Appropriating A Johannesburg Prison for Women’s Activism
DESCRIPTION:PAS Affiliates Lunch Lecture Series Serious Fun at Sun City: Re-Appropriating A Johannesburg Prison for Women’s Activism Lisa Biggs\, Performance Studies\, Northwestern University Wednesday\, April 11th\, 12pm\, lunch served! Prison are deeply embedded in the political economy of urban areas\, yet they are imagined to be liminal sites -- beyond the city\, even beyond the boundaries of civil society -- where “convicts” are segregated from the presumably law-abiding rest of society. Since 2008\, however\, a select group of women prisoners from “Sun City\,” the Johannesburg central prison for women\, have been allowed to use theatrical performances to challenge their physical separation and to complicate contemporary South African discourse about crime\, justice\, and why women break the law. This paper investigates the labor of women behind bars to transform the public’s understanding of urban crime\, law enforcement\, and the place of women as citizens using performance. It argues the layering of anti-apartheid song and dance born in the townships\, alongside the women’s personal stories about wrong-doing\, in their performance\, “Serious Fun at Sun City\,”encourages a radical reconstruction of the Rainbow Nation. Lisa Biggs is a 5th year PhD candidate in Performance Studies whose research investigates the impact of theatre and dance programs for incarcerated women who are held in prisons and jails in the US and in South Africa. www.northwestern.edu/african-studies
