Kumoi Saxophone Quartet: Masato Kumoi, soprano saxophone; Wataru Sato, alto saxophone; Kazuyuki Hayashida, tenor saxophone; Takahiro Nishio, baritone saxophone
Tokyo native Masato Kumoi earned a master’s degree from Northwestern in 1983, the same year he won the silver medal at the International Competition for Musical Performers. His solo career took off in 1991 with his performance of To the Farthest Land of the World for soprano saxophone, and five years later he formed a quartet with colleagues Wataru Sato, Kazuyuki Hayashida, and Takahiro Nishio.
The Northwestern University Saxophone Ensemble will perform several premieres on the second half of the program.
