Access to Justice: Legal Aid and Legal Literacy in Ethiopia

A Discussion with Staff from the Center for Human Rights at Addis Ababa University

Throughout the world, but particularly in developing countries, poor people do not have access to legal information and advice and therefore lack access to justice. While the rich purchase the services of a lawyer, the poor cannot. In conjunction with Ethiopia's Department for International Development and the University of Glasgow's Active Learning Centre, the Center for Human Rights at Addis Ababa University has established Legal Literacy, Rights Advice and Information Centres in three areas of Ethiopia and is now piloting ways of delivering outreach services in rural areas. The overall purpose of the project is to ensure that poor people in identified urban and rural areas have knowledge of their constitutional rights and freedoms, access to legal information and advice, and the means to obtain remedies before the law.
