Target Audience:

•    Healthcare profession educators
•    Beginner or intermediate level users of simulation-based educational strategies

Description of course:
This course is designed for simulation educators who want to enhance their healthcare debriefing skills. Through a mixture of interactive didactics, small group work, and debriefing exercises, participants will learn the basics of debriefing, including: how to create a supportive yet challenging environment, how to structure a debriefing, and how to use an honest yet nonthreatening approach in promoting a balanced discussion about areas of strength and improvement.

For those who are new to debriefing, the session will provide a solid foundation on which to benefit from the future mentored debriefing experiences that will help augment skills and expertise.

After this session, the participant will be able to:

1.    Briefly discuss the rationale for debriefing in simulation-based activities
2.    Discuss and demonstrate the elements of an effective debriefing, including debriefing structure and specific strategies of inquiry using an honest yet non-threatening approach
3.    Demonstrate simple facilitation techniques
