As increasing numbers of colleges and universities are embracing on-line education, learning how to teach effectively in an on-line environment is an increasingly important skill to develop. Yet, designing an online course that promotes active learning and student engagement is no easy task. In this interactive panel, participants will explore key questions related to online teaching and learning, such as: What are the components of an effective online course? In what ways is face-to-face teaching similar or different to teaching online? What demands does teaching online place on the instructor? How does one "TA" an online course? Participants will have the opportunity to discuss these and other questions about online teaching and learning at length.
Jennifer Hobbs is a Graduate Teaching Fellow with the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching. She is a sixth year graduate student in the Physics department doing computational and behavioral research on the neuromechanics of the rat whisker system. In addition to her Graduate Teaching Fellow position, she is also a Teaching Consultant for the Searle Center and has previously served as a Graduate Teaching Mentor (2011-2012) and TA Fellow (2009, 2010, 2011). Jennifer has been a TA for a number of the introductory physics courses (Physics 125-3, Physics 130-1,2,3, Physics 135-2,3) as both a discussion and laboratory TA, and helped redesign the Bio210 sequence as an HHMI Teaching Fellow for the NuViBE program in 2011-2012.
Caitlin A Frano, Director of Distance Education at Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies, specializes in curriculum design, universal instructional design, and technology-enhanced learning. Caitlin holds a master's degree in education focusing on curriculum and instruction with a specialization in adult learning theory. She has over 20 years of teaching and training experience in higher education, corporate, and consulting settings in onground, online, blended, and simultaneous learning formats. She is a frequent speaker and host of workshops for various professional organizations.
Muveddet Harris is a Program Associate with the Searle Center for Advancing Learning and Teaching, supporting faculty programs, research projects, and program assessment. Muveddet holds an M.S. degree in Medical Informatics from Northwestern University and has experience in the program's online and campus teaching settings. Her teaching experience involved teaching students from various professional backgrounds including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and IT specialists.
Alex Ansari is a PhD candidate in mechanical engineering whose research involves modeling, simulation, and control of dynamic systems, most recently focusing on projection based methods for optimal control and the development of continuous and hybrid sensitivity optimization techniques for dynamic planning of nonlinear systems. Alex enjoys teaching and is excited by the opportunity to support technologies that extend the public accessibility of educational resources online. He is currently a TA for Todd Murphey's Coursera MOOC "Everything is the Same: Modeling Engineered Systems" and has previously TA'd courses including Engineering Analysis 3, Intro to Mechatronics, and Theory of Machines: Dynamics.
