Description:

Why code mobile applications in native languages like Objective-C (iOS), Java (Android), and Visual C++/C# (Windows Mobile)?

Apache Cordova is an open-source platform for building native, cross-platform mobile applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Adobe PhoneGap wraps this open source functionality in cloud-based app packaging to make the process a bit easier to handle.

Representatives from the Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies (CBITs) at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine will present a series of research applications that make use of the Adobe Cordova toolkit to serve a variety of research needs including:

* Mobile assessment of research subjects.
* Delivery of text, video, and audio interventions.
* Delivery of dynamic form-based tools.

About the Presenters

Mark Begale and Eric Carty-Fickes are software developers at CBITs. CBITs is made up of a multidisciplinary group of researchers working in the fields of Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology, Medicine, and Health Services. Learn more about the technology behind CBITs.

You Will Learn

At this Mobile Meetup you will learn about:

* The difference between a responsive mobile web app and an offline PhoneGap application.

* Some benefits and pitfalls of using an offline HTML5 application instead of natively coded mobile applications.

* Some sample research applications made for Android mobile devices using PhoneGap/Cordova.

* A CBITs native Android application called Purple Robot that provides additional functionality for PhoneGap based applications.

The Mobile MeetUp series is a chance for faculty and staff at the University to learn more about mobile technology, trends, and apps impacting the academic and work environments of the University.

Registration is requested.
