CIRTL Brownbag Coffee Hour Series: Leveraging Diversity
"Creating an Inclusive Classroom III: What our African American Students Have to Say"
Date and Time: May 22, 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM
Online Presenters: Cristóbal Salinas Jr., Iowa State University, Denise Williams, Iowa State University, LeQuetia N. Ancar, Iowa State University
“I don’t like going to class…the other students, the professor…I don’t feel like I belong there.” Could this quote be from a student in your class? The multicultural student population is increasing at most institutions across the U.S., while their retention and graduation rates have historically been lower than their majority peers. To address this disparity, this coffee hour will take a look at the learning environment for multicultural students. This seminar will prepare you to better understand and address racial dynamics in the classroom with a focus on the student voice. We will discuss issues from a global, local, and individual perspective, assisting you to create a more inclusive environment. As a part of the coffee hour we will focus on three different populations: Men of Color, Latino/a Students, and African American students.
