NU Cross-Cultural invites you to join us for a dinner and presentation by Dr. Gina Samuels on "Colorblindness and Other Distortions of Power and Privilege in Transracial Adoption." The most publicly debated and emotionally contentious issues in adoption policy and practice are those related to race. Yet, policy approaches to addressing race disparities in child welfare engage a “colorblind” rather than color conscious approach. This presentation will address several “realities and myths” of transracial adoption to argue that the philosophy of colorblindness in particular, whether guiding policy or parenting, is a distortion rather than a remediation of such disparities.
