Sean Hanretta, History
Sean Hanretta focuses on the intellectual, cultural and religious history of West Africa. He is currently working on a long-term project on the history of Muslim weddings and funerals in Ghana, as well as projects on higher education in West Africa, on the proto-Afrocentrist Edward W. Blyden, and on an overview of religion in modern Africa. He is particularly interested in the theory of historical evidence and in non-documentary forms of historical sources. He taught at the Colorado College, Dartmouth College, the University of Florida and Stanford University before coming to Northwestern. His book, Islam and Social Change in French West Africa: History of an Emancipatory Community, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2009 and his shorter works have appeared in the Journal of African History, Comparative Studies in Society and History, Past & Present, the Oxford Handbook of Modern African History, and other volumes.
