" Applying health IT to target disparities in the use of statin therapy for the primary prevention of coronary heart disease among high risk adults – lessons learned from a site-randomized controlled trial within a network of federally qualified health centers”
The “Meaningful Use” of clinical decision support within electronic health records requires more than just “turning on” specific technologies, such as clinical reminders, order sets, or other discrete clinical decision support tools. Rather, it should be thought of as a process for enhancing health-related decisions and actions with pertinent, organized clinical knowledge and patient information to improve health and healthcare delivery. In this study, we compared two implementation strategies (practice coaching and use of a clinical decision support implementation toolkit) that aimed to improve the meaningful use of clinical decision support to advance cardiovascular disease prevention efforts. To address longstanding racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic disparities in cardiovascular disease prevention, this study was conducted within a Practice-based Research Network serving several priority populations including rural and inner city communities, low income and uninsured populations, and racial/ethnic minorities. During this seminar, we will review the major study findings and lessons learned regarding the implementation and dissemination of clinical decision support within safety net settings.
