Abstract: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death and major cause of disability in this country. Dietary interventions aimed at attenuating cardiovascular disease have emphasized diets low in fat consumption for a long time. This study examined the effects of a low-carbohydrate diet, a popular weight-loss diet, as compared to a standard low-fat diet on cardiovascular risk factors and appetite hormones in a 12-month parallel randomized controlled trial of dietary behavioral intervention among 148 obese adults free of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease.
