Description:

“Myopathy of Peripheral Arterial Disease: A
Translational Perspective”

The latest data on the pathophysiology of Peripheral artery disease (PAD) demonstrate that ischemia and ischemia-reperfusion in PAD limbs initiate mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative damage, and inflammation in the affected limbs, producing injury to every structure of the leg including muscles, nerves, skin, and subcutaneous tissues. Accumulating injury in the affected leg leads to progressive decline in muscle performance (claudication) and loss of the integrity of tissues in the ischemic limb, presenting as tissue loss/gangrene. Injury to the skeletal muscle of the ischemic legs (myopathy of PAD) is the better explored component of this process in PAD limbs and is a fundamental element of the pathophysiology of claudication. The talk will focus on the pathophysiology of the myopathy of PAD and its translational importance.
