Description:

Priscilla Briggs is an artist whose work engages in conversation about the shifts in identity and values in the system of the global market. In Making Mona Lisa, she specifically explores the Wushipu and Haicang oil-painting communities of Xiamen, China to discuss how mass production has changed understandings of authorship, authenticity, labor and the artist. In focusing on this billion dollar industry, Briggs draws upon mass production’s influence on labor practices as they relate to art and craft. Briggs' works include still-life photographs of the painters' live/work paces and commissioned paintings of her photographic portraits of the workers. This combination brings attention to the ways in which the replica is created, draws attention to art as laborious work, and acts as a metaphor for the complexities of the global market system.

Exhibiton Dates: September 18th - October 24th
Reception: September, 18th 6-8 pm
