Dr. Allen, a native of Newcastle, UK, is working under the guidance of Professors Thomas O’Halloran (Chemistry) and Teresa Woodruff (Obstetrics & Gynecology) to investigate the underlying biochemical mechanisms for meiotic cell cycle modulation by zinc. Previous collaboration between these faculty members and a team of reproductive biologists, synthetic chemists and imaging specialists has shown that intracellular zinc fluctuations play a major role in coordinating cell cycle events that are responsible for successful maturation of the oocyte, its fertilization and subsequent embryogenesis.
