“Theoretical and Practical Considerations for Developing and Evaluating Health Intervention Technologies Using Emerging Media”

With the continued rise of mobile phones and social media as popular means of communication, researchers are interesting in exploring whether and how to utilize emerging media technologies to improve users’ well-being and promote health outcomes. However, a growing body of literature on digital inequality has shown that users’ demographic and socioeconomic background may differentiate their access opportunities and the benefits of using new information and communication technologies. In this talk, I will present some key findings of the current research on digital inequality and social media use, with an emphasis on how individuals incorporate information technologies into their daily routines, particularly in interpersonal contexts. I will then discuss implications of the differentiated use of emerging media for developing and evaluating health intervention technologies. I will focus on possible strategies of incorporating emerging media into research and product design to offer better connection with theory and improved data quality in health evaluation and intervention research.

Bio: Dr. Yuli Patrick Hsieh is a survey methodologist and digital sociologist in the Digital Technology and Society program in RTI International’s Survey Research division. His program of research focuses on the implications of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for social relationships and digital inequalities in people’s social, psychological, and economic well-being. He examines how people use ICTs to maintain their personal networks and engage in public affairs. Specifically, he studies how these mediated communication practices, along with factors of socioeconomic characteristics and digital skills, may relate to ICT users' life outcomes. He also examines how to incorporate ICTs into questionnaires as a form of recall aids to improve the data quality of personal network surveys. Patrick received his doctoral degree from the Media, Technology & Society program, at Northwestern University's School of Communication. Prior to Northwestern, he received an MA in sociology from University of Illinois at Chicago and another MA in social informatics from Yuan-Ze University in Taiwan.
