"HealthySMS: An Automated Text Messaging Platform for Clinical Support and Ecological Momentary Assessment"

This presentation will describe HealthySMS, an automated text messaging platform that can be customized with any user’s content and scheduling needs for use as a clinical decision support tool or for ecological momentary assessment/intervention.  The presentation will provide an overview of the system features in the context of a use case as a treatment adjunct to cognitive behavioral therapy.  I will present initial findings and as well as lessons learned in that experience.  Future development directions will be presented such as the integration of enhanced alerts, customized responding and integration of predictive analytics.

Adrian Aguilera, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Welfare at UC Berkeley.  He is also an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), where he directs the Latino Mental Health Research Program. Dr. Aguilera’s research focuses on utilizing digital technologies to improve mental healthcare for low-income and underserved populations.  His most recent work has been the development and testing of a text messaging based companion to cognitive behavioral treatment for depression with the goal increasing engagement and improving outcomes.
