Faculty Workshop: How Am I Supposed to Teach My Course with All These Requests for Exceptions?
As Northwestern's student body is becoming more diverse, so too are students' experiences in the classroom and requests for course support. The number of Northwestern students eligible to receive disability-related accommodations has tripled in the last 10 years – but Millenials' requests for flexibility and support are not limited to those who have documented disabilities. For instance, faculty are increasingly working with students for whom English is not the first language, students who have attended high schools with limited resources, and students who experience a setback (such as flu, a concussion, or a death in the family) that is intensified in the context of a fast-paced quarter. This workshop will employ a combination of presentation and group work to identify ways in which your courses can (or cannot) flex in the face of the various requests for exceptions that our students make. Please bring your syllabi and come prepared to share your best practices as well as your biggest challenges. Note: participants will have an opportunity to ask questions in advance to allow for a more customized session.
