Title: Creativity in Art, Technology, and Science: Lessons and Myths
Speaker: Julio Ottino, Northwestern University
Abstract: Creativity is essential in art, science, and technology. Philosophers, placing the emphasis on uniqueness, have declared that science is ephemeral and that art is permanent. They placed artistic creation on the highest plane, giving rise to one of the most persistent myths that art is equated with creation and creation with inspiration. However, is this actually true? And in what ways is creativity in these three areas different? In what ways is it similar? How do these domains intersect and enrich each other? Or more pragmatically, are there creative processes and lessons that can be transferred across domains? I will argue that artistic creativity reveals processes that hold lessons for scientific and technological creativity.
