Description:

Diurnal variation in gut microbiota structure and function is dependent on both dietary and endogenous host factors. Timed generation of microbially-derived metabolic cues induced by diet or endogenous host factors are determinants of and are integrated back into host circadian clock metabolic responses to light-dark cues. High fat diet markedly alters diurnal patterns of gut microbial structure and function that disrupt both central and peripheral clock function in a tissue-specific manner. Collectively these data suggest that gut microbes, through circadian clock regulation, determine metabolic set points.
