Numerous Gram-negative bacterial pathogens use type III secretion systems to deliver virulence effectors into infected host cells. Pathogenic Yersinia species introduce type III effectors into macrophages to inhibit phagocytosis, inflammasome activation and cytokine secretion. One aim of Dr. Bliska's research is to understand how type III effectors work at the molecular level to inhibit innate and adaptive immune response. Recent studies that investigate how a type III effector inhibits inflammasome activation will be described.
