This seminar will focus on how viruses and hosts utilize non-coding RNAs to regulate infection and the host response to infection. I will put forth the hypothesis that in contrast to plants and insects, in at least some mammalian cell contexts, RNA interference (RNAi) is not a relevant antiviral response. On the contrary, components of the RNAi machinery have been usurped by diverse persistent viruses for their own benefit.
