My principal research interests include identifying new therapeutical targets aiding in resolution of inflammatory disorders of mucosal surfaces by elucidating key molecules and mechanisms that regulate leukocyte trafficking and endothelial/epithelial homeostasis. I use biochemical and molecular techniques, advanced intravital imaging approaches and in-vivo tissue injury models to study the roles for leukocytes in the regulation of intestinal barrier function, wound healing and inflammation induced tumorigensis and metastases. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes, including neutrophils are typically associated with pathologic inflammation and are viewed as detrimental to tissue function. However, emerging evidence suggests that they may play a role in the regulation of tissue homeostasis. Thus it is of great interest to me to elucidate the roles for neutrophils in epithelial cell development/differentiation and proliferation/migration in homeostasis, disease and cancer.
