Description:

Alma Gottlieb (African Studies) U of I-Urbana Champaign

For the first time in several years, this Red Lion Lecture will be held at its namesake, the Red Lion Pub (2446 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL 60614).

Summary: How and when did Jews come to live on the Cape Verde islands? And what does this historical fact mean to contemporary Cape Verdeans living both on the islands and in the global diaspora? In this talk I interrogate unexpected religious and racial crossings and their impact on forging complex subjectivities.

Bio: Alma Gottlieb is a cultural anthropologist with interests in infants and children, gender, religion, diaspora, humanistic anthropology, and ethnographic writing. She has conducted fieldwork in Côte d’Ivoire and, more recently, with diasporic Cape Verdeans with Jewish heritage (in Europe, Cape Verde, and the U.S.). Her research and writing have been supported by the Guggenheim Foundation, Social Science Research Council, National Endowment for the Humanities, and other agencies. She has authored and edited eight books, including most recently The Restless Anthropologist (listed by YBP Library Services as one of the year’s twelve best books in anthropology in 2012) and (with Philip Graham) Braided Worlds, a sequel to their Victor Turner Award-winning memoir of their life with the Beng people in Ivory Coast, Parallel Worlds: An Anthropologist and a Writer Encounter Africa. Prof. Gottlieb has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since 1983 and has also taught and held research appointments at other campuses including the École des Hautes Études (Paris), Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), the Instituto Superior da Ciências Sociais e Políticais (Lisbon), Princeton University, and Brown University.
