Cardiovascular Epidemiology Seminar Series

“Lifestyle Factors in Primordial Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease: Emphasis on Exercise”

Primordial prevention in cardiovascular disease requires the avoidance of cardiovascular risk factors, such as obesity, elevated fasting glucose levels, and a suboptimal lipid profile. This approach differs from primary prevention, or the management of risk factors. Lifestyle factors impact the development of cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease. The adoption of healthy lifestyle choices seems to be a key component of primordial prevention. In particular, maintaining an exercise program or maximizing opportunities to incorporate physical activity into one’s daily routine powerfully reduces the emergence of cardiovascular risk factors. This talk will focus on the mechanisms that may contribute to exercise induced cardio-protection, discuss population differences in exercise responses, and briefly touch on nutritional and environmental factors that affect cardiovascular health.
