Postdoctoral Candidate Presentation

“Peripheral Nervous System Function,
Physical Activity and Physical Fitness in Older Adults”

Peripheral nervous system (PNS) impairments in the lower extremities are associated with slower gait, poor physical function, and lower strength, as well as an increased risk of falls and mobility limitations in older adults. These impairments are common in older adults and independent of diabetes, which is often considered the main contributor to PNS impairments. Reduced physical activity and physical fitness are potential factors in the pathway between PNS impairments and mobility disability in older adults. This presentation focuses on reduced physical activity and fitness as factors in this disability pathway. Like many chronic conditions, PNS impairments may develop over long periods of time, providing opportunities for intervention. Promoting physical activity earlier in life may potentially help to address PNS impairments and other chronic conditions as well as promote health across the lifespan.
