October 1, 4-6pm

Dittmar Memorial Gallery

On the morning of November 29, 1864 more than 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho people were viciously massacred at Sand Creek Colorado. Cheyenne and Arapaho artists, Brent Learned, George Levi, Merlin Little Thunder and BJ Stepp, descendants of the victims at Sand Creek, have created this exhibition.  Their work focuses on the remembrance, honor and strength of their ancestors and leaders.  This exhibit is a collection of paintings and ledger art that give a visual history of the event, the people and places.

Native American Contemporary Art- Brent Learned will give a presentation on the status of Native Americans in contemporary art, which will include an onsite demonstration of his current work.

Ledger Art - George Levi will lecture about the process of Cheyenne ledger art and provide an interactive demonstration.

The Traditional Art of the Cheyenne People- Merlin Little Thunder will present a power point of paintings depicting Cheyenne people and their lifestyles.

Check the Dittmar Gallery Website for updated information.  All events are free and open to everyone.  The development of this exhibit is the collaboration with Trickster Gallery, a Native American art Gallery located in Schaumburg Illinois and Dittmar Gallery.  Funding is provided by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
