Description:

The Department of Physiology invites faculty, staff, and students to a seminar presentation featuring Vikram Shakkottai, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Neurology, University of Michigan.

Cerebellar ataxias are untreatable neurodegenerative disorders that result in uncoordinated movements and falls, frequently leading to wheelchair confinement. At the cellular level, the ataxias are primarily associated with neuronal loss within the cerebellum and its associated pathways. Neuronal dysfunction precedes and accompanies neuronal loss and contributes to motor symptoms, but the exact nature of this neuronal dysfunction remains poorly understood. We are interested in early changes in physiology that accompany motor dysfunction, and to determine whether these changes in physiology contribute to neurodegeneration. Our studies aim to determine whether these changes in physiology contribute to neurodegeneration. Our studies aim to determine whether correcting abnormal physiology may represent a novel route to symptomatic and/or neuroprotective therapy for these currently untreatable disorders.
