Day 1 of a two day Symposium organized by Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow Bilha Moor. This symposium is the first one of its kind at Northwestern, brings together a group of Islamic art historians to present their current studies in figurative painting of the pre-Modern Islamic lands. It examines Arabic, Persian, and Ottoman illustrated manuscripts, which were produced in the 13th-17th century, in Iraq, Greater Iran, and the Ottoman Empire. The symposium addresses the relationship between word and image, questions of patronage and reception, as well as theoretical approaches to the study of Islamic painting.
Event begins at 5:15 PM. Enter through the Modern Wing entrance and take the elevator to the 3rd floor for the Fellows lounge.
Event is generously funded by the Myers Foundations.
