"Examining the Interplay between Individual and Contextual Factors as they Inform Ethnic-Racial Minority Youths’ Adjustment"
Abstract: Ethnic-racial minority youth in the U.S. are disproportionately at-risk for experiencing poor academic, psychological, and health outcomes. Broadly, my work examines mechanisms underlying ethnic-racial minority youths’ positive development and adjustment. The current presentation will introduce findings from a study based on longitudinal data with 204 Mexican-origin families in the U.S. Guided by the integrative model for the study of developmental competencies in ethnic-racial minority children, I examined the role of mothers’ cultural characteristics, mothers’ cultural socialization efforts, and children’s characteristics (i.e., skin tone and gender) in predicting ethnic-racial identification among 5-year-old Mexican-origin children. Findings highlight the importance of the family context for youths’ positive adjustment.
