Workshop Description:

Community engagement within higher education is often aimed at transforming students into active citizens concerned with serving the common good. But what effect does community engagement have on student learning? This workshop will investigate the relationship between community engagement in the classroom and students’ cognitive development. We will explore the advantages and challenges of civic engagement pedagogies, and discuss strategies for aligning community engagement projects with learning objectives. After completing this workshop, you will have the framework and resources necessary to successfully use civic engagement projects in your future courses and academic programs with the purpose of fostering student learning.

Workshop Facilitators:

Stephanie Brehm is a doctoral candidate in American religions, studying religion, media, and popular culture in contemporary American life. Stephanie is a Graduate Teaching Fellow at the Searle Center.

Laura Dingeldein received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Brown University in 2014 and currently teaches courses at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Lake Forest College. This is Laura’s second year as a Graduate Teaching Mentor at the Searle Center.
