Description:

Hilary Duerksen spent her undergraduate years at the University of Minnesota getting her BA in Global Studies: Governance, Peace and Justice focused on Latin America. Her experience as an AmeriCorps *NCCC member led her to begin her career with the American Red Cross. Hilary spent over four years with the Disaster Services department as a paid employee focusing on Client Casework, Mass Care, Logistics and Service to Armed Forces. She is now the Manager of Community Preparedness and Resilience overseeing the International Services, Service to Armed Forces, Community Preparedness and Youth and Young Adult programs. In this role she engages over 100,000 underserved individuals and youth in preparedness activities and education, and reaches thousands of Servicemembers and their families as well as hundreds of refugees with emergency family communications. Hilary is has also been named a Global Disaster Preparedness Center Fellow, a joint project with the American Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent.

 

Michelle McSweeney is the Manager of International Services and Service to the Armed Forces Programs at the American Red Cross of Chicago and Northern Illinois. She is a member of the National Mentor Network and is a nationally-certified instructor for International Services program development. Michelle also served as the 2015 Co-Chair for the Chicago World Refugee Day Committee that celebrates the vibrant refugee communities in Chicago and brings together over 400 people each year. She graduated from the University of Iowa with her BA in Spanish and International Studies, and Certificate in International Business. She also studied abroad at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain. Michelle began her career with the American Red Cross in Disaster Services, where she coordinated relief efforts for local disasters, deployed to national disaster relief operations including Hurricane Sandy, and oversaw the NPRC*AmeriCorps program. Michelle currently volunteers as a Child Advocate for the Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights.
