The individual synapse is perhaps the best candidate for the "elementary processing unit" of the brain; moreover, synaptopathies are implicated in a variety of neuropsychiatric diseases. These considerations have motivated many years of intense study. While basic elements of synaptic structure and function were already understood by the early 1960's, many aspects of the synapse remain puzzling and somewhat mysterious. My talk will review what is known about the synapse, and what remains obscure.
