Microbiology-Immunology Seminar Series
"Staphylococcus aureus is an important human pathogen responsible for both community and hospital-acquired infections. The pathogenic lifestyle of this bacterium depends on an arsenal of virulence factors that blunt the host immune response to promote bacterial growth and tissue damage. One class of virulence factors is the bi-component leukocidins. These toxins forms pores primarily in immune cells, often resulting in cell death. In this seminar I will discuss our recent discoveries of how these toxins selectively target cells and the contribution of the toxins to infection in murine models of bloodstream infection."
