Description:

The Department of Pharmacology invites you to a guest speaker lecture presented by Amynah Pradhan Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dr. Pradhan studies the neurobiology of opioid receptors. In particular, her lab has developed preclinical animal models to understand the role of opioid receptors in acute and chronic migraine pathophysiology. Her group is interested in understanding the mechanisms that lead to migraine chronification, and developing novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of this disorder.

Below is an overview of the seminar as described by Dr. Pradhan:

Migraine is a debilitating disorder that affects over 30 million people in the United States. Opioids are regularly used to treat migraine, but often result in increased pain and drug dependence. Drugs that activate the delta opioid receptor have decreased abuse liability, and we have recently found that delta agonists could be effective migraine treatments. We have also developed a novel mouse model of chronic migraine using the known human migraine trigger, nitroglycerin; and recent work from our lab indicates that super-activation of the nitic oxide pathway contributes to migraine chronification. Ongoing studies are focused on the development of novel migraine therapies.
