Workshop Description:

Identifying clear learning objectives are only one part of effective course design. Finding ways to measure student mastery is central to effective teaching. In this workshop, participants will analyze and consider ways to align different types of assessments to learning objectives and their different stages of mastery. We will also discuss how assessments can also be used as scaffolding for deeper understanding and not just as tools to measure competency. Participants will leave this workshop with a plan for aligning course objectives with a scaffolded assessment strategy and will also begin a draft assessment that they can use in later courses.

Workshop Facilitators:

Sean Harvey is a doctoral candidate in the History Department who specializes in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands and environmental history. He is a current Graduate Teaching Fellow.

Kevin Hsu is a doctoral candidate in the Psychology Department. He is a current Graduate Teaching Mentor.
