Faculty - University Teaching Roundtable: “I’m Not Old School. I’m What They Tore Down When They Built The Old School”: Reflections on the Value of Transparency in Teaching
McCormick Award Winner Dan O’Keefe is an old-fashioned teacher. He lectures, uses PowerPoint, and administers machine-scored multiple-choice exams. He does not give students clickers, stop lecture to have students discuss in small groups, “flip” the classroom, or “disrupt” anything. There are no quizzes or lab assignments or term papers or required readings. However, his students regularly make such comments as “You will think and learn so much in this class” and “I know the material from this class better than any other course I have ever taken.” So what is he doing that makes him such a successful teacher? One contributing element is that he is, in a word, transparent. Transparency in teaching is a powerful, but often overlooked, strategy for enhancing student learning. Dan’s transparency manifests in an opening day discussion of prior students’ CTEC comments, explicit study guides that help students reason through the material, and clear structuring of content, assessments, and grading. In this workshop, Dan will discuss how transparency —about lecture material, what students should know, and how students are evaluated—can revivify traditional instructional formats.
Light refreshments will be provided.
