Description:

This study proposes a new methodological approach based on Bayesian bivariate growth curve location-scale models, to analyze whether and how life-course trajectories of offspring resemble those of their parents. We characterize individuals’ life trajectories of characteristics (such as economic status, BMI, alcohol consumption, and psychological wellbeing) by four growth parameters–initial position, grow rate, growth acceleration, and volatility–and test intergenerational associations in these parameters. Unlike most intergenerational association research that measures characteristics in each generation based on a snapshot or a person-average approach, we incorporate a life-course, dynamic perspective into the transmission of sociodemographic characteristics across generations. Drawing on 45 years of family data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (1968-2013), we show that not only does individuals’ characteristics change over time, but they change in a way similar to that experienced by their parents.
