Description:

Special AMO/Small Scale Fundamental Physics Seminar

April 13th, 2017, 2:00 PM, F160

Abstract:

Positive results from either direct searches for particle dark matter or neutrinoless double beta decay would have profound implications on our understanding of particle physics and cosmology. I will review the field of contemporary rare-event searches, focused on the detector design philosophy that has historically led to success. I will argue for new experimental techniques that defy tradition, including small-scale experiments, which may give us access to large unexplored regions of parameter space and increase our chances for discovery.
