Graduate Teaching Spring Symposium

Join us for wine, appetizers, and conversation!

Tuesday, May 2, 2017
3:00PM - 5:00PM
John Evans Alumni Center (1800 Sheridan Rd)

We invite you to a cross-disciplinary discussion about teaching and learning led by graduate students at Northwestern.

Panel 1: Navigating Institutional Power Dynamics

Graduate students play multiple roles on campus, and power dynamics can easily become complicated. In response, some departments have begun to outline expectations for faculty and graduate students in teaching roles. Panelists will address some of the issues graduate students face working as teaching assistants and offer thoughts on how to make those working relationships as effective as possible for both faculty and graduate students.

Panel 2: Making the Most of Graduate Life

What can graduate students do to navigate potential impediments to their professional advancement? The character of instructor-student authority relations has great bearing on the quality of students' educational experience and instructors' work. How can graduate students assert their authority and claims to knowledge in the classroom? How are challenges to that authority manifested in the classroom and teaching evaluations? For example, how can their role in the classroom be influenced by gender expectations? How can instructor positionality create a benefit or barrier to fostering an inclusive course climate?

While the event is free, registration is required. Please REGISTER by April 30.
