Abstract: In this presentation, Linda Resnik, PT, PhD, FAPTA, Director of the Center on Health Services Research and Training (CoHSTAR), funded by the Foundation for Physical Therapy will define health services research and discuss the concept of value in health care.   She will provide an overview of major initiatives driving healthcare payment reform. and explain the critical need to quantify the value of physical therapy given the current policy environment. Resnik will present an overview of her career path, early research, and research questions that led her to discover health services research. She  will highlight several important research methods and approaches used in health services research such as case-mix adjustment and hierarchical models to control for nested data structures. She will also illustrate several important, ongoing physical therapy relevant HSR projects underway at Brown University and through CoHSTAR. Finally, Dr Resnik will talk about the opportunities for training and pilot awards available through CoHSTAR.  

Brief Bio: Dr. Resnik is a Research Career Scientist at the Providence VA Medical Center (PVAMC) and an  Professor in the Department of Health Services, Policy and Practice at Brown University’s School of Public Health. A physical therapist by clinical background, she is the Principal Investigator of the Center for Health Services, Research and Training (CoHSTAR), funded by the Foundation for Physical Therapy.  CoHSTAR aims to train highly skilled physical therapists and health policy researchers and mentor both young and established investigators in research methods. Dr. Resnik is also the Leader of the Providence VA’s Rehabilitation Research and Development funded Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology's Focus Area on Restoring Limb Function.   Dr. Resnik was an Editorial Board Member of Physical Therapy Journal for over 10 years, and was the co-editor on PTJ’s Special Series on Health Services Research. In 2016 she was named a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the APTA. Dr. Resnik has led several large multi-site studies across the VA and department of defense related to advanced upper limb prosthetic devices.  She has been funded by public and private-sector research grants totaling more than $20 million with awards from the NIH, VA, DOD and  others.   Dr. Resnik received her Ph.D. in physical therapy from Nova Southeastern University, her MS in physical therapy from Sargent College, Boston University, and her BS from Hampshire College.  She completed an AHRQ funded postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research at Brown University.
