Description:

University Teaching Roundtable: Taking Risks in Teaching
Date: Thursday, May 11, 2017
Time: 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

In this University Teaching Roundtable, McCormick Award Recipient, Wendy Wall will lead a discussion of the experiments that we as teachers make pedagogically, not simply in terms of offering new or different materials of study, but in terms of the format of a class and the modes of assessment used. How do you go about designing a course that moves beyond familiar structures? How do you create modes of experiential learning? Or incorporate new technologies into assignments? The case study offered focuses on a co-taught class on “Shakespeare’s Circuits” that involved student attendance at local performances and exhibitions of Shakespeare’s works as well as a digital and interactive class project that sought to record and map  the way plays and adaptations of Shakespeare spread from Elizabethan London through time and across many regions of the world.  What are the risks involved in trying innovative pedagogical methods? What are reasonable expectations for success in the first incarnation of a new experimental course?

Light refreshments will be provided.
