Description:

The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar – A new museum

Exhibitions are the primary form of communication for the Majlis. They aim to introduce and facilitate exploration of topics to better equip audiences to examine the media world surrounding them, and engage with it. Audiences leave empowered and with a greater understanding and ability to themselves interrogate the media and journalism surrounding them. Each exhibition will offer a 360° perspective of a narrow but deep, multi-faceted topic. Over time this will allow for the accrual of a deep body of knowledge available for students, researchers, and media professionals.

The internal ethos that drives The Media Majlis is: Always Another Side. This principle allows the Majlis to blow open subjects by exploring different disciplines and perspectives—enriching every story to offer a 360° perspective. The Media Majlis never assumes a story is finished, and interweaves contributions from media, specialists and academia with those of students, professionals, and visitors, representing multiplicity and inviting lesser-heard voices to speak. This ethos, devised from extensive interview and focus groups with faculty, staff and students as well as media professionals in Qatar, draws on a primary aspect of NU-Q: the journalistic principle of achieving impartiality by understanding different perspectives.

The exploration, discussion and interrogation of media, journalism and communication—pasts, presents and futures—through global, regional and local/Qatar lenses.
